Udaipur

Dubbed the ‘Venice of the East’, the city of Udaipur is built around three interconnected lakes – Lake Pichhola, Fateh Sagar Lake, and the smaller Swaroop Sagar Lake – and is encircled by the hills of the Aravalli mountain range. It is home to an array of ancient temples and fairy-tale-like palaces (several of the latter have been converted into luxury heritage hotels) and is known as one of Rajasthan’s most beautiful and romantic cities. Must-see attractions include the City Palace, the Lake Palace (set on a small island in the middle of Lake Pichola), and the Udaipur Solar Observatory – Asia’s premier solar-gazing site.

Kumbhalgarh

Set in the state of Rajasthan in northern India, Kumbhalgarh is an area most famously known for housing the astounding Kumbhalgarh Fort, which has been dubbed 'The Great Wall of India'. Spanning over an incredible 36 metres and dating as far back as 1443, this mighty hilltop fortress' wide ramparts and perimeter walls bring life to the historical Rajput Era. In addition to its breathtaking effect, the fortress houses two spectacular on-site temples, one Hindu and one Jain. For travellers looking for an experience amidst nature alike, the expansive Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary offers hiking and horseback trails through a forested region of the Aravalli Hills, which is home to several endangered animals, including wolves and leopards, as well as hundreds of bird species. Although many choose to visit Kumbhalgarh on a day trip from Udaipur, just over 80 kilometres away, spending more time in the area allows travellers to truly appreciate its beauty.
